Young woman with Autism Finds her Independence through the Promise in Brevard #WATWB

Welcome to the “We are the Blog fest post”.  The #WATWB was inspired by a simple conversation about how all the negativity on social media was weighing on us. Wanting to make a difference we decided to try to do our part to infuse social media with all the good stories that are out there. We hope to share the stories that show kindness, compassion, hope, overcoming challenges and in general, the impressive resilience of the human spirit. For this week, I decided to focus on a video and story I saw through humankind stories about a young woman with Autism who was fighting to find her own independence.

The young woman by the name of Rachel who has autism faced a life without her own independence because for 7 years she felt no one would ever give her the chance.

Rachel states, “I wanted to be independent and I am really happy I am here.”    What she is referring to is the fact after being turned down for a job after job.  Rachel states how depressing it was for her.   But after waiting so long a burger place decided to take a chance on her.

She states, ” I service the dining room, wiping tables, and the front counter.”

Now Rachel has a job and also a cozy apartment thanks to Promise in Brevard, and independent living community which helps adults with special needs.  She is now learning to take care of routine housework.   This has always been a dream come true for her and now she is working on her next big goal and save up for a car.

In addition, Promise in Brevard won a 100,000 grant from A Community Thrives in 2017.

In Conclusion,  I love this story because it is about a young woman who wanted to be independent and I love the fact that she was able to accomplish it all through the Promise in Brevard Community and now the funding will help others with special needs live their own independence.
