  • Hey everyone welcome to another monthly post of We are the Blog Fest #WATWB. My co-hosts for this week are Sylvia McGrath, Mary Giese , Shilpa Garg, , , Belinda Rittenhouse and I am Sylvia Stein.

    For this week’s post I chose another story from Human Kind on USA Today, entitled, “Five Year Old defies the odds after brain surgery“, This story comes from 5- year old Jaysaiah and how he was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation in his brain which is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels .His mother, Shavonne

    Reddick states, ” Jasiah came out of the kitchen when they were in the living roomand he stated that his head hurt.” She adds, ” We thought he had a bump or had hit himself and then he vomits and falls to the ground.”

      His doctor Pediatric Neurosurgeon states, ” Jaysaiah had a brain bleed and this ishow it presents itself on the brain as a bleed or a seizure. Doctor Svokos continuesby stating,” These can be fatal especially with the size he had so this is why hisfamily decided on the surgery.”

    In addition to having had Jaysaiah in the hospital the family also had to navigate his hospital stay during the pandemic. His mother states, ” No one could visit him, when my husband Jimmy and I would be at the hospital we could not be there at the same time, the only thing communication for him to see any of his family members was through facetime,  His mother adds as she tries to hold back her tears. She continues by stating,  “It was an emotional time with my husband having to work and we not always beable to be with Jaysiah.”

    Then after a few more surgeries, it was time to remove all the abnormal blood cells from his brain. This last surgery was the scariest and the longest. His father states, ” He was in surgery for 24 hours and it was tough, but after surgery Jaysaiah was back to himself. ” He did not lose any cognitive development he had his memory, and we were glad.”

    Jaysaiah did have a setback post-surgery with a small stroke which left him with aleft-sided weakness. He did have to go to rehab for a few months. He was able to come back and fight even through all the setbacks.

    Now Jaysaiah has even started kindergarten with his twin brother Javien and he is improving every day. I loved this story so much because it showed the strength of this amazing 5 year old boy and his family and with all of the love and support he was able to defy the odds and overcome the biggest of obstacles especially not only dealing with a near fatal condition but also through the pandemic. As his doctor states, ” He is a fighter.”

Extraordinary ways to serve others #WATWB

Hey everyone welcome to another monthly post of We are the Blog Fest #WATWB. My co-hosts for this week are  Eric Lahti, Roshan Radhakrishnan , Shilpa Garg, Peter Nena and I am  Sylvia Stein.

For this weeks article, I am focusing on a story that I read through living waters for the world.org where they focus on true and inspiration stories for compassionate communities. I was really taken by this story because it came out through extraordinary times as we deal with the effects of covid 19 and what it has done to to help others around the world step up.

For example, ” In extraordinary times, people will find extraordinary ways to serve. One beautiful example can be found in the village of Santa Rita de Oriente, Honduras. The team that operates the community’s Living Waters for the World (LWW) water purification system is using funds from their water sales to help struggling families in new ways.”

On April 2nd Sandra Aly from Santa Rita de Oriente posted the following to the Honduran water site WhatsApp group:”The purifier of Santa Rita de Oriente, Santa Barbara, used proceeds from the sale of water to donate food to the most needy families in the community because of the situation we are experiencing.“

Furthermore in 2018, “this rural village partnered with an LWW volunteer team from Virginia to install a water purification system that could make their contaminated water safe to drink.”

In conclusion, “They installed the system in a central location to provide affordable, clean water for the entire community.   In addition, “During the coronavirus pandemic struck, they allocated 60% of their water profits to pay for food and necessities for struggling families.”

One of the main reasons I loved these story is because this organization has partnered with other Honduran water companies and they have found inspiration in Santa Rita de Oriente’s generosity. It is just amazing to see so many extraordinary people come together and help each other and lean on one another and help others.

This is a wonderful organization that helps many people all over the world.
